Thousands of young students in Australia walked out of schools to protest government inaction on climate change. They were joined by parents and teachers in demonstrations that took place across the country. The protests occurred simultaneously in numerous cities including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Mia Thom, a student in Byron Bay said, “We felt the need to leave school, because this is our future. We can’t sit idly and watch them not act upon something that is so critical and encompasses the whole human race.”

With heavy reliance on coal-fired power plants, Australia is one of the major emitters of greenhouse gases in the southern hemisphere. A United Nations’ report released Tuesday says countries including Australia aren’t on track to meet emissions reduction targets set under the Paris Agreement.
